(Disclaimer: I’m like a week and a half behind. Sorry for the lack of posts. Who knew convention in the largest city in the world would be non-stop go go go!? There are lots more to come. I just needed a nap before I could write more posts)
Today I went out early on my own shopping for a cool Japanese kitchen knife. Unfortunately I had to stay within my budget. There is roughly ¥148 to $1.00 so as long as I keep the comma in the right place, it would not be too difficult. Below are all the knives that were NOT in my budget 🙂 I did buy 2 knives, both “santoku” knives, I will have to upload the pictures later when I unpack them. I even got my name engraved on the blade in Japanese!
Below are some cool buildings we took pictures of while riding in a taxi and walking around on the way to eat dinner. Even when a shopping stall is closed, the doors are painted very beautifully.
Have you ever had a Wagyu steak? Well when in Japan, why not splurge!? So first off in Japan, Wagyu beef has to meet strict guidelines: only 4 breeds are approved, feeding and care must follow specific practices, the marbling also has to receive a high quality grade. Needless to say I was expecting a delicious expensive steak. Well, whether it was all the numbers rattling around from buying knives or the brain fog and watering mouth, I almost ordered the waitress’ recommendation. Thankfully Leah asked me “Really? How much is that steak!?” Which made me double check where the comma was. The steak was not ¥8,800 like I thought. No, this Wagyu was Kobe beef and was a whopping ¥80,800!
I will save you the math, $545!!! Good Job Leah! Wheew. Instead Rachel and I each ordered the small Wagyu filet. We were not disappointed. What is the best way to present a steak and make your customer feel like it’s a million bucks? How about topping it with gold flakes and delivering it to the table in a smoking metal briefcase 😝. Check out the photos below. It was absolutely delicious. Leah and Kiana also enjoyed their sushi and fried rice (not pictured.) Also, my shot of sake was served as a shot glass in a square cup. S The waitress then filled the shot and overflowed it to fill the outer square cup too – Kampai!
In case you want do it yourself at home here is the 3 minute video of the chef searing Rachel and my steaks.
We took a walk and looked for dessert after a yummy dinner.

Nice knives, are you gone be able to bring it home? Fantasy, fantasy how they presented your steaks! Looked pretty yummy too ( to red for me).
